It Has Always Been About the Children.

Our work began in childcare, but our purpose has always been bigger: protecting childhood, supporting the people who care for children, and raising expectations for what children and families deserve.

The Childhood Difference

A community built around one belief: childhood matters.

Protecting Childhood • Raising the Standard

At its core, The Childhood Difference exists to protect childhood while raising expectations for the people, programs, businesses, and environments entrusted with children. We believe children deserve more than simply being supervised, accommodated, or prepared for the next stage of life. They deserve a childhood filled with meaningful relationships, play, exploration, connection, safety, belonging, and the freedom to actually be children.

The Childhood Difference brings together families, childcare providers, educators, and the broader community through trusted guidance, professional support, resources, events, products, and advocacy.

Meet the Founders

Built From Experience

We aren't approaching childcare from the outside looking in. Together, we bring years of hands-on experience leading, operating, growing, and improving an early childhood program—from the classroom to the director's office and everything in between.

Children First. Always.

Every decision comes back to one question: Is this good for children? We believe children deserve environments that protect childhood, respect development, value play, and expect more from the adults responsible for their care—not more from the children themselves.

Support for Providers

We know how demanding this work is because we've lived it. We help owners, directors, and educators strengthen their programs with practical resources, thoughtful guidance, operational support, and solutions that actually work in real childcare settings.

A Connection for Families

Families deserve more than a Google search when choosing who will care for their children. We're creating a trusted connection between families and quality childcare providers—while building a larger community centered around children, families, and the people who care for them.

Why We Started

After years of working side by side in early childhood education, we realized that so many of the conversations we had within the walls of our own childcare program needed to happen on a much larger scale.

Conversations about quality. About what families should be able to expect from childcare. About what providers need in order to do this work well. About the pressure to push children toward the next milestone, the next academic expectation, and the next stage of life before they've had enough time in the one they're already in.

And most importantly, conversations about what children actually deserve.

We created this company because we believe improving childhood requires supporting everyone responsible for shaping it. That means helping childcare providers build stronger programs, giving families better information when choosing care, creating resources and community, and advocating for decisions that put the needs of children first.

We aren't interested in asking children to become ready for the world faster.
We're interested in asking the world to do better for children.

Connie Davidson

Co-Founder | Early Childhood Advocate & Educator/Director

Alison’s journey into early childhood education began as a working mother searching for childcare for her own children. When she couldn’t find the kind of environment she wanted for them, she decided to create it herself.

What began as a home daycare grew over eight years before Alison expanded into a licensed childcare center, which she owned and operated for seven years. Throughout that journey, her approach was guided by one simple question: Would I want this for my own children?

Years of raising her own children while caring for hundreds of others strengthened her belief that the early years are incredibly important—and incredibly short. Alison believes children deserve environments that honor how they actually develop, protect their time to be little, and recognize that the experiences they have during these formative years can influence them long after childhood has passed.

Connie’s perspective on childhood was shaped by her experience as a mother, educator, and early childhood leader. She spent five years teaching in the public school system before transitioning into early childhood education, where she served as Director alongside Alison for six years.

Her experience across both public education and early childhood education gave her a unique view of what we ask of children—and reinforced her belief that what society has come to accept as normal isn't necessarily what's best for them.

Earlier academics, more structure, more pressure, and higher expectations aren't automatically better simply because they've become commonplace. Connie believes we should be asking a much more important question: What do children actually need? Her philosophy centers on development, relationships, play, emotional well-being, and meeting children where they are—not where adults are in a hurry for them to be.
